As part of the "Sharing the planet" unit, our grade 4 students inquired about, biomes, habitats and the various behavioural and physical adaptations that organisms have in their environments. Our eco-conscious aspiring biologists were challenged to create their very own animals. In addition to improving their research and design-thinking skills, students had the opportunity to showcase their communication skills by presenting their amazing work during an exhibition attended by both parents and fellow KIS students.

Before you begin using iPads with students, take the time to set up expectations. These should not only focus on what do do on the iPad, but also how to use it appropriately. I created an iPad with "apps" on it to highlight the 9 simple expectations we have for the devices. The colors coordinate to what is a "must do" in red, a "should do" in yellow, and "please do" in green.
When I need to get student attention I say "Screens Down". The students then flip over the iPad and turn off the sound and look at me. This is similar to the "1, 2, 3 eyes on me" call and repeat. It ensures that they are not distracted by their screens while I am modeling or giving instructions. It works with kids from 3 to 93. I used Canva and the Noun Project to make these. Please email me if you would like a copy of the template. 1st Grade Number and Number SenseFocus: Place Value and Fraction Concepts 1.1 The student will a) count from 0 to 100 and write the corresponding numerals; and b) group a collection of up to 100 objects into tens and ones and write the corresponding numeral to develop an understanding of place value. Computation and EstimationFocus: Whole Number Operations 1.4 The student, given a familiar problem situation involving magnitude, will a) select a reasonable order of magnitude from three given quantities: a one-digit numeral, a two-digit numeral, and a three-digit numeral (e.g., 5, 50, 500); and b) explain the reasonableness of the choice. 1.5 The student will recall basic addition facts with sums to 18 or less and the corresponding subtraction facts. 1.6 The student will create and solve one-step story and picture problems using basic addition facts with sums to 18 or less and the corresponding subtraction facts.
